Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR64
Snow-9, Rarest Small Cent Date

1856 1C Snow-9 PR64 PCGS. Rose-red, orange-gold, and jade-green compete for territory across this fully struck and luminous near-Gem. A tiny strike-through on the right pendant of the T in UNITED is as made. Void of spots, and carbon is virtually absent. One small steel-gray area is seen above the crosslet of the E in CENT. Although technically a pattern, the 1856 is typically collected as part of the Flying Eagle cent series. Its historical importance is unquestioned, not only because it introduced the small cent denomination, but because demand for examples fueled the growth of the coin collecting hobby throughout the second half of the 19th century. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins by Jeff Garrett.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2011), lot 3068; (David Lawrence, 3/2012), lot 7732.
