    Description

    1856 Flying Eagle Cent
    Choice Proof, Snow-9

1856 1C Snow-9 PR64 PCGS. Sea-green toning dominates this razor-sharp near-Gem, although glimpses of peach-red outlines obverse design elements. The eye appeal surpasses the numerical grade, since the moderately reflective surfaces are free from detractions. Most 1856 Flying Eagle cents are classified as Snow-3 business strikes or Snow-9 proofs. The former were struck in 1856 to demonstrate the new diameter and design. The numismatic hobby was booming in America, and soon an 1856 Flying Eagle cent was considered requisite in every collection. The U.S. Mint met growing demand for the issue with Snow-9 proof restrikes, coined circa-1859. Nonetheless, the 1856 remains the rarest date of the small cent denomination.
