Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR65
Sharply Struck Snow-9 Restrike

1856 1C Snow-9 PR65 NGC. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent was the first small cent date. Only a few hundred pieces were struck in 1856, mostly from Snow-3 business dies. That number was insufficient to meet growing public demand, and the Mint produced additional specimens in proof format circa 1859, typically from Snow-9 dies. Those coins typically have sharp strikes and good eye appeal. The present Gem is a quality proof restrike with predominantly peach-gold color. The fields and wreath show moderate steel-gray toning. Devoid of contact, and carbon is minor. A splendid example of the coveted first-year rarity. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins by Jeff Garrett.
