Description

1856 Flying Eagle Cent, Unc Details
Proof Snow-9 Restrike

1856 1C Snow-9 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. Proof, Unc Details. The 1856 is the first and rarest date of the small cent denomination. Snow-3 business strikes proved so popular with collectors that the date was restruck, in proof format, circa 1859 from Snow-9 dies. These examples are always in demand. The present well-struck proof cent displays mahogany-brown centers with areas of gunmetal toning across the borders. The field above the front wing shows minor flan flaws, but contact is essentially absent. This coin has strong eye appeal despite faint repair work in the lower left obverse field. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent is listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2024), lot 3859.
