Description

1857 Flying Eagle Cent, PR64
Bright, Deeply Reflective Fields

1857 1C Flying Eagle PR64 PCGS. CAC. The 1857 Flying Eagle cents were the first of the design save for the 1856 issue, technically pattern coins although collected alongside the regular issues. Collectors prize proofs of both issues. This near-Gem 1857 displays deeply mirrored fields, but each side is quite different from the other. The obverse shows die striations, the lower portion actually showing streaks in the planchet itself, not a result of die polishing. The surfaces are bright with just a hint of reddish patina. The reverse displays deep gray-gold patina with noticeable brightness between the wreath and dentils. Numerous light specks of carbon are sprinkled over the obverse. Population: 22 in 64, 17 finer. CAC: 12 in 64, 7 finer (7/19).
