1858 Large Letters Cent, PR67 Ultra Cameo
The Single-Finest Certified

1858 1C Large Letters PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Snow-PR1. Occasionally prooflike Flying Eagle cents are confused with the very rare proof strikings, but in this case there can be no confusion. The diagnostics for genuine proofs are listed in Rick Snow's 2014 reference that covers this series. They include: diagonal die file marks in the denticles below the first 8 and the 5 in the date. The date also slants up to the right. Minor doubling is also seen on UNITED. On the reverse, a minute die file mark is located in the denticles just left of 12 o'clock. These die markers are all very small and strong magnification is required to pick them out. However, they are present, and this die was not used on any business strikes.

As with all genuine proof Flying Eagle cents, the fields are deeply mirrored and the striking definition is razor sharp. This coin is truly a wonder to behold. The fields show unfathomable depth of reflectivity and the devices are nicely frosted, yielding an unmistakable two-toned cameo effect. The surfaces are hairline-free and we cannot locate any specks of carbon. There are a few tiny planchet voids on each side, probably microscopic lint marks from when the dies were wiped prior to striking. The only one that might be large enough to use as a pedigree identifier in the future is located just above the bottom of the E in ONE on the reverse.

Only 100 Large Letter proofs are estimated to have been struck. This number is based upon a known production of 80 silver proof sets plus a small number of pattern sets, probably no more than 20 pieces. Snow believes no more than 50 examples survive today in all grades, a number that would make an original mintage of 100 pieces seem like a reasonable estimate.

This is the finest example certified by either of the two major services, and it is essentially an unimprovable coin. The pristine surfaces retain a generous amount of original whitish color from the copper-nickel alloy with the addition of a light overlay of pale-red accents on each side. This remains the only proof 1858 Large Letters cent certified as Ultra Cameo by NGC. PCGS has not certified any Large Letters examples above PR66. The present piece is the single finest-certified Ultra or Deep Cameo proof 1858 cent from either major service. NGC Census: 1 in 67 Ultra Cameo, 0 finer (9/24).
