1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, R.3 -- Ex-Jewelry
-- ANACS. PR45 Details. "It's still a stella." For an
interesting data point concerning the intense demand that the
unusual stella or four dollar gold pieces see from collectors, one
need look no further than lot 4831 of our FUN Platinum Night
(Heritage, 1/2012), an 1879 Flowing Hair stella, whose description
began as quoted above. Described as "Plugged, Harshly Cleaned, --
NGC Details. XF," the lot was already bid up to $13,800 within a
week after the Platinum Night auction was launched. The final sale
price was a healthy $32,200, indicative of the incredible market
strength this type coin enjoys. We use the words "type coin"
advisedly, as this pattern issue has been collected alongside
regular-issue type coins for generations and is included in the
Guide Book right after three dollar gold pieces --
not in the patterns section.Though this stella was used in jewelry and shows numerous contact marks and cleaning aftereffects, "It's still a stella." Perhaps this light yellow-gold example is the right coin for your set?(Registry values: P1)
