    1879 Flowing Hair Stella, PR58
    Judd-1635, Important U.S. Pattern

1879 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1635, Pollock-1833, R.3, PR58 PCGS. Likely Judd-1635 or Pollock-1833, struck in standard 90% gold, as were all of the four dollar gold pieces, in our opinion. The standard diameter for half eagles was 21.6 mm. (0.850 inch), and Andrew Pollock, III, notes that observed diameters for the four dollar gold pieces was between 0.850 and 0.852 inch. The four dollar and five dollar gold pieces were clearly the same diameter.
Unless the metric alloy was authorized for regular coinage production, and today we know that no such authorization materialized, there was no reason for Mint personnel to take the time and effort to create planchets of a nonstandard composition. These four dollar gold pieces were the same diameter as half eagles, so planchet production was merely a process of rolling the strip slightly thinner than that used for half eagles. The same planchet cutter was used for both denominations.
The 1879 Flowing Hair stella struck in gold ranks among the most famous pattern coins in U.S. Mint history, likely the result of its listing in the Guide Book for many years. This extremely important example shows a trace of wear on the high points and should receive considerable bidding interest from those who are unable to afford a high grade proof. Both sides retain noticeable proof surface with a few scattered marks consistent with the grade. The surfaces display rich green-gold with light orange overtones. An exceptional opportunity.
