1956 Franklin Half Dollar
PR68 Deep Cameo
Rare Type One Example

1956 50C Type One PR68 Deep Cameo PCGS. Walter Breen (1988) estimated that 95% of all proof 1956 half dollars have the Type Two reverse, identified by three feather tips left of the perch, instead of the Type One subtype with four tips to the left. In addition, most proofs of the era lack dramatic white-on-black cameo contrast. But here is a coin with both blatant cameo contrast and the obsolete Type One reverse.

This frosty and flashy specimen is brilliant with immaculate surfaces. The coin is virtually perfect save for a few pinpoint retained planchet flakes of mint origin. More recently, Rick Tomaska (2011) states, "While the 1956 Type One Proof Franklin is extremely scarce in cameo, it is extremely rare in ultra or deep cameo." PCGS has not certified any 1956 proofs above the MS68 Deep Cameo level. Population: 3 in 68 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (9/19).(Registry values: P2)
