Extremely Rare 1856 Proof Gold Dollar
1856 PR 64 PCGS. There is no official mintage for 1856 gold dollars, but the most reliable estimates place the number of coins known today at around 7 or 8 pieces. There is no mistaking this coin for anything other than a proof. The fields have the distinctive bottomless reflectivity that makes proofs so special and exciting. Additionally, the devices are well frosted, providing a strong field-to-device contrast. Diagnostically the coin is also in line with known characteristics for proofs with the date low and slanting upward to the right. A few wispy hairlines account for the grade, but there are no unsightly contact marks on either side.
