Description

Delightful PR63 Cameo 1857 Gold Dollar

1857 G$1 PR63 Cameo NGC. Proof coins were first struck for sale to collectors in 1858. All pre-1858 proofs range from rare to extremely rare. The proof mintage of the 1857 gold dollar is unknown. What is known is that only six proofs have been certified in all grades by NGC, all as Cameo. PCGS has graded a total of five proofs, none as Cameo. This makes a combined NGC and PCGS total of 11 proofs, although several of those likely represent resubmissions or crossovers. Clearly, the 1857 is very rare in proof format.
The present specimen has impressive contrast between the frosty devices and the glassy fields. The strike is intricate, and there are no obvious hairlines. A desirable proof gold rarity, housed in a prior generation holder. Census: 1 in 63 Cameo, 5 finer (5/08).(Registry values: P6)
