PR65 Cameo 1857 Gold Dollar
Very Rare Pre-1858 Proof Gold

1857 G$1 PR65 Cameo NGC. Prior to 1858, the U.S. Mint had no organized program for selling proof sets to collectors, and so production of proofs was small and erratic. This held true especially for gold coins; Garrett and Guth state of the proof 1857 gold dollar: "The mintage is unknown, but it may be somewhere in the 15 to 18 coin range. There are probably about 10 coins still remaining." This Gem Cameo specimen is a glittering prize with intricately detailed and generously frosted devices. Small lint marks at the lower obverse and reverse, among other places, will aid in future pedigree identification. Census: 3 in 65 Cameo, 1 finer (11/12).
