    Description

PCGS 1857 PR 64. An unknown, but presumably very small, number of proof gold dollars were struck in 1857. Estimates of the number of survivors are solidly in the range of 8-10 pieces with one researcher claiming to have pedigrees on nine separate coins. This was the year before commercial production of proofs began in earnest in the mint, and all dates prior to 1858 are rare and important objects. This coin is tied with two others as second finest certified, with only one coin finer, that being a PCGS PR 65. The surfaces of this piece are very close to gem quality with no important or mentionable contact marks being noted on either side. The fields are deeply reflective and the coin overall has a rich reddish-orange patina that is most attractive. A very rare opportunity for the advanced gold specialist to pick up an early proof striking in the gold dollar series. (NGC ID# 25DY, PCGS# 7607)
