Description

NGC 1857 PR 63 Cameo. A very rare proof striking. An unknown, but small, number of proofs were struck in this year. Akers estimates that perhaps 15 proofs were produced with an estimated 8-10 pieces believed extant today. The fields of this coin are noticeably hairlined, but are also unfathomably deep in their mirrored reflectivity. On the reverse there is an alloy spot that covers the loops of the bow, and this is the most obvious identifier for pedigree purposes. A rare and valuable proof gold coin that was struck the year prior to the commercial production and distribution of proofs by the mint. Population: 2 in 63, only 2 are finer (10/94).
