Rare PR64 1858 Gold Dollar
With Unacknowledged Cameo Contrast
1858 G$1 PR64 PCGS. A significant proof striking as 1858 was
the first year proof coins were available to the collecting public
at large. As such, it marks the beginning of the modern era of
proof coinage in this country. An unknown, but small, number of
proof gold dollars were produced in this year with reliable
estimates of only 10-12 pieces believed extant today. This is a
deeply reflective specimen that shows generous portions of mint
frost on the devices, producing an attractive two-toned cameo
effect, even though this is not mentioned on the early design,
green insert PCGS holder. A light milky haze has developed over the
years, a sign of complete originality. Easily identified by a small
lintmark adjacent to Liberty's mouth. Population: 8 in 64, 2 finer
