1858 Gold Dollar, PR66 Deep Cameo
    Tied for Finest at PCGS

1858 G$1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. Although Mint records are lacking, it is estimated the proof 1858 gold dollar had a limited mintage of only about 25 coins. Survival estimates are generally in the 15 to 18-coin range, although Garrett and Guth suggest as many as 20 pieces are known. Regardless of the precise number, this issue is far rarer than has been suggested by certified population data which records 33 appearances at NGC and PCGS combined (2/16). Virgil Brand had three specimens in his collection and Harry W. Bass, Jr. accumulated four. This is not a reflection of availability, but rather of rarity; these numismatists recognized the scarcity of the issue and sought to acquire as many pieces as possible.

The present coin is tied with one other example for finest certified at PCGS, an important consideration for Registry Set enthusiasts. This piece exhibits stark field-device contrast and showcases lovely yellow-gold color. The deep mirrors show a couple of Mint-made strike-throughs, but the visual quality is uninhibited. Population: 2 in 66 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (2/16).(Registry values: P5) (PCGS# 97608)
