Conservatively Graded PR63 Cameo 1859 Gold Dollar

1859 G$1 PR63 Cameo PCGS. The 1859 is a rarely encountered proof gold dollar. Of the 25 pieces that were actually sold to collectors (out of the 80 produced), estimates of the number of survivors range from 12-15 (Breen, 1988) to 20 (Akers, 1975). In either case, this is a very rare issue. Over many years of cataloging rare coins we have noticed a trend. It seems that very rare coins, such as this one, have a tendency to be more conservatively graded than a more common coin. For a PR63, this is an absolutely lovely coin. Yes, there are a few light hairlines in the fields, but one would expect that. But close examination with a magnifier does not reveal any contact marks or other distractions that would account for the PR63 grade. As indicated in the grade given by PCGS, the devices are nicely frosted and present a noticeable contrast against the deeply mirrored fields. This coin represents an exceptionally good value for the astute collector who recognizes the rarity of this issue. Population: 1 in 63, 1 finer (4/03). (NGC ID# 25E2, PCGS# 87609)
