Description

1859 Gold Dollar, PR64
Old Holder, Unacknowledged Contrast

1859 G$1 PR64 PCGS. CAC. Though Mint records list a mintage of 80 pieces for this earlier proof gold dollar issue, that figure drastically overshot demand. Between meltings at the Mint and natural attrition, just 15 to 20 survivors are known, per Garrett and Guth. This near-Gem specimen is housed in a small-format PCGS "rattler" holder that predates the use of Cameo designations and so makes no acknowledgment of the considerable contrast on orange-laced yellow-gold surfaces. The reverse has even reflectivity, while the obverse shows a subtle rippling effect along the margins.(Registry values: P5)
