Cameo Proof 1861 Gold Dollar, A Significant Gold Rarity

1861 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. Fields of deep mirrored reflectivity form a splendid backdrop to the nicely frosted devices on both sides of this yellow-gold Gem. As befits a proof striking, the devices are fully detailed, but some slight evidence of overzealous die polishing on the part of Mint employees is noted in the left reverse wreath. The surfaces are free of both hazy overtones and distracting hairlines.
The Philadelphia Mint delivered 349 proof gold dollars in 1861, but the chaos of the Civil War probably resulted in most of these coins being melted at the end of the year. Estimates of survivors range from 21-25 coins, and both major grading services report only four (resubmissions?) examples at or above the PR66 level of preservation.
From the Paul R. Goodus Collection.
