    1861 Gold Dollar, PR65 Cameo
    Rare in All Grades

1861 G$1 PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. Mint records show a mintage of 349 proof gold dollars in 1861, though it is likely that the majority were left unsold and were later melted, as survivors of this issue are nearly as rare as are those of the 1862 proof issue, which had a significantly lower mintage of only 35 coins. The certified population counts 34 survivors in all grades, though this number is likely inflated by resubmissions. This Gem example displays deep mirroring in the fields and soft frost over the devices. The strike is crisp, as is expected on a proof, and the preservation is on par with the immense eye appeal. Census: 3 in 65 Cameo, 5 finer (8/14).
