Gem Cameo Proof 1861 Gold Dollar

1861 G$1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. A Gem Cameo Proof that will easily please even the fastidious connoisseur, with deeply reflective fields, highly lustrous devices, and lovely light yellow color. Although a few faint hairlines may be seen in the fields, this is an exceptional and highly appealing example, and it is also a rarity, one of an unknown but clearly limited number originally struck at the beginning of the Civil War. The generally reported mintage figure for Proof gold dollars in 1861 is 349 coins, but we tend to think that this figure is impossibly high. Only 1860 and 1861 saw recorded Proof mintages in excess of 100 coins, until 20 years later when the reported figures again climbed over 100 coins in 1882. Population: 2 in 65, 0 finer (1/06).(Registry values: P4)
