    Description

Sparkling Gem Proof 1861 Gold Dollar

1861 G$1 PR65 PCGS. Even though 349 proofs were reported minted, it is obvious that the vast majority were melted, as with most of the other denominations struck in this year. It appears that today fewer than three dozen proofs survive in all grades, and perhaps as few as two dozen. This is a deeply reflective piece that has a modest amount of frost on the devices. There are virtually no contact marks on either side, just a few tiny lint marks that were struck into the planchet after the dies were wiped with a soft cloth. Population: 11 in 65, 1 finer (10/03).(#7611) (Registry values: P4)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25E4, PCGS# 7611)

    Weight: 1.67 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
