    Description

Splendid, Rare 1861 Gold Dollar, PR66 Cameo

1861 G$1 PR66 Cameo NGC. The large recorded mintage figure of 349 coins is misleading. Most must have been melted. Garrett and Guth say the date is about equally as rare as the 1862, which had 35 pieces reported. Both occur an average of about one auction appearance per year. In fact, this is an issue that we have offered only 12 times in the past 13 years, according to our Permanent Auction Archives.
This splendid Premium Gem Cameo coin boasts deeply mirrored fields that offer sharp contrast against well-frosted devices. The orange-gold patina has significant reddish outlines around the devices on each side. One tiny planchet flaw, as made, appears between TA in STATES. Census: 4 in 66 Cameo, 2 finer (8/09).(Registry values: P4)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25E4, PCGS# 87611)

    Weight: 1.70 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
