    1861 Gold Dollar, PR66
Only 30 to 35 Coins Believed Known
    Subtle Field-Motif Contrast

1861 G$1 PR66 NGC. CAC. The reported mintage of 349 proof gold dollars in 1861 is misleading; if that many coins were actually struck, almost all were likely melted as unsold. Today, only 30 to 35 pieces are believed extant, putting the 1861 proof about on par with the 1862 and 1863 issues which had mintages of only 35 and 50 coins, respectively. The Smithsonian Institution contains two examples and another resides in the American Numismatic Society Collection. The combined NGC and PCGS certified population total of 35 coins is undoubtedly inflated by resubmissions.

Examples are known both with and without Cameo contrast, but either variant is extremely rare finer than the Gem grade level. This Premium Gem representative shows razor-sharp detail and gleaming yellow-gold surfaces that show modest, undesignated field-device contrast. A thread-like strike-through appears at 9 o'clock on the reverse, but there are no post-mint distractions. Census: 2 in 66, 0 finer (6/15).(Registry values: P4)
