Description

Deep Cameo Gem Proof 1862 Gold Dollar
    One of 35 Specimens Coined

1862 G$1 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. Even in the first full year of the Civil War, the U.S. Mint's nascent proof-set sales system continued. Though records indicate that only 35 proof gold dollars were struck, it is clear that a certain numismatic elite kept up its coin-collecting activities. (One wonders how many of those purchasers had been among the picnickers at the First Battle of Bull Run/Manassas the year before.) In any case, the 1862 proof gold dollar is rare regardless of condition, to say nothing of a Deep Cameo Gem specimen such as this orange-gold beauty. Saturated mirrors with just a touch of clouding surround richly frosted and intricately detailed devices. Population: 2 in 65 Deep Cameo, 1 finer (11/12).
