Description
Rare 1864 Cameo Proof Gold Dollar
1863 PR 64 Cameo NGC. According to mint records, only 50 proofs were produced during this Civil War year, so the rarity of this gold dollar has never been in question. Today there may only be about a dozen survivors from this already small mintage. In addition to the rarity of this coin, we can add superlative condition. The cameo effect on the obverse of this near-gem is pronounced, with the light-gold, satiny head of Liberty set against the nearly black reflectivity of the mirrored fields. The obverse shows the typical die polish below the ear. The reverse also features a quality strike, with slightly deeper golden-rose color. A few light hairlines account for the grade of this rare, early proof.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25E6, PCGS# 7613, GSID# 8127)
