Description

Extremely Scarce 1863 PR 64 Cameo Gold Dollar

1863 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Mint records show that a mere 50 proof gold dollars were produced during this Civil War year and through population data (allowing for resubmissions) and auction records it can be reliably estimated that fewer than half of this already small mintage survive today. In addition to the rarity of this diminutive proof gold coin, we can add superlative condition. The cameo effect on the obverse of this splendid example is pronounced, with the light-gold, satiny head of Liberty set against the nearly black reflectivity of the mirrored fields. Diagnostic die polish is visible below the ear. The reverse is slightly deeper in hue with similarly frosted devices. A few light hairlines account for the grade, but really do not detract from the appeal of this elusive proof gold dollar. Population: 6 in 64, 4 finer (9/99).
