1864 G$1 PR 64 PCGS. While the year 1864 garners most of its historical significance from such Civil War battles as Kennesaw Mountain and the Wilderness, it also witnessed the production of some of the Philadelphia Mint's rarest and most desirable coins. With a mintage of 50 pieces and an extant population of 12-13 pieces, the 1864 proof gold dollar is one such issue. The present representative exhibits deep, green-gold coloration and intense cameo contrast. The sharply struck devices and smooth features combine to ensure this coin's status as one of the finest examples available to today's collectors. (NGC ID# 25E7, PCGS# 7614)
