Description

1865 Gold Dollar, PR65 Deep Cameo
JD-2 Original, Rare in Any Grade

1865 G$1 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. JD-2, R.7. Ex: Simpson. Original proof striking. Three different proof die pairs are documented for the 1865 proof despite a mintage of only 25 pieces. In United States Proof Coins, Vol. IV: Gold, John Dannreuther writes:

"The JD-2 Proofs were presumably struck on March 8th from the same reverse die as the circulation strike that were all made on January 27th. The JD-3 examples are later strikes and these are the coins that are restrikes."

All three proof varieties combined, there are only 11-16 different coins believed to survive. Dannreuther estimates that 10 to 12 of those pieces represent the JD-2 Original die pair. The Simpson Gem is one of just two Deep Cameo examples reported at PCGS. Sharp, frosty motifs complement orange-peel fields with watery reflectivity. A dash of amber toning at 9 o'clock on each side serves as a pedigree marker. A stunning piece of the utmost rarity. Population: 1 in 65 Deep Cameo, 1 finer (11/21). CAC: 1 in 65, 1 finer (12/21).(Registry values: P5)
