Description

1865 Gold Dollar, PR66 Ultra Cameo
Only One Finer

1865 G$1 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. Mint records show a mintage of only 25 proof gold dollars at the end of the Civil War in 1865, and this survivor is a remarkable example from that limited production. In nearly two decades of auction archives, this is only the fourth appearance of a proof 1865 in any of our auctions. Past offerings include one each in 1996, 2005, and 2010, the last offering equal to this piece for the finest that we have offered.
Just six of the 15 NGC certified examples have received the Ultra Cameo designation, including three submissions at this grade, and one finer piece (11/11). Another 11 submissions have been certified at PCGS, none with their Deep Cameo designation. Resubmissions are clearly part of those population totals, as the two services record more certification events than the original mintage. The alternative is that some fully prooflike business strikes have been graded as proofs. There are probably only 12 to 15 true proofs known.
This Premium Gem Ultra Cameo proof is undoubtedly just that, a remarkable specimen with no question about its proof status. The strike is full, the bright yellow surfaces are nicely contrasted, the fields are deeply mirrored, and the devices are fully lustrous. A small lint mark at the top of the obverse further proves its proof status. An incredible example for the connoisseur.(Registry values: P5)
