Very Rare 1866 Proof Gold Dollar--Tied For Finest Certified
1866 PR 66 PCGS. Probably because of this date's unavailability as a proof, it is not generally known by anyone outside specialists as the rarity that it is. Only 30 pieces were originally struck, and it has been reliably estimated that today somewhere around 12 or 13 may still exist in all grades. A diagnostic of 1866 proofs is that the tops of the wreath touch, as they do on this coin. This is a charming piece of proof gold. The fields are deeply mirrored with sufficient frost on the devices to give the coin a cameoed appearance. The obverse has a deep reddish-coppery patina while the reverse is bright yellow-gold. The only notable surface flaws are a slight scuff on the lower portion of the 1 in the denomination and two milling marks below the 86 in the date. Tied for finest certified with one other piece according to the June data from PCGS.
