Description
1869 Gold Dollar, PR64
With Perceptible Cameo Contrast
1869 G$1 PR64 PCGS. The 1869 proof gold dollar issue was a
smallish affair amounting to a meager 25 pieces, of which perhaps
half or a bit more survive today, 12-15 per Bowers' series Guide
Book and 14-16 per PCGS' CoinFacts. All of the proof gold
dollar issues from 1862 through 1880 were mighty skimpy
productions, never more than 50 proofs per year. Interestingly, the
proof 1869 gold dollar (as well as several other issues) features a
reuse of the 1862 obverse die, displaying the upright of the first
headdress feather mostly polished away. The present near-Gem proof exhibits distinct field-device contrast on the reverse but less so on the obverse; removal from its green-label PCGS holder could make it a contender for Cameo status. The surfaces offer intense reddish-gold color interspersed with a few hazy elements through the obverse fields. Population: 3 in 64, 0 finer (6/13).(Registry values: P5)
