1870 Gold Dollar, PR64
Desirable Low-Mintage Proof
1870 G$1 PR64 PCGS. One of just 35 proofs struck for this
date. To be sure, a tiny mintage by any measure, but in reality
this proof date is rarer still, since PCGS estimates 17 to 22
survivors in all grades. Only now are collectors realizing the
opportunities offered by low population, condition-rarity gold --
especially proof gold, which provides the combination of
quantitative rarity and aesthetic appeal. This exquisite gold
dollar is a case in point. Highly reflective, its flashy gold
surfaces deepen to a slightly deeper orange-gold near the rims. The
strike is complete throughout. A few raised die striations are seen
on each side. PCGS population is two in 64 and four finer. NGC
reports one in 64, one finer (12/13). A wonderful coin combining
quality, rarity, and high appeal. Certified in a green-label
