Description

1872 Gold Dollar, PR64+ Cameo
Well-Struck Type Three Example

1872 G$1 PR64+ Cameo NGC. CAC. The mintage of proof gold dollars in 1872 is given as only 30 pieces complementing the meager business strike production of 3,500 coins, so one can easily deduce that this near-Gem proof is among the few finest survivors -- but the Cameo designation and CAC sticker each put it further into the minority. Generous field-device contrast appears throughout, with attractive orange-gold color on surfaces that show a moderate "orange peel" effect. The Type Three proofs struck up quite nicely, as this lovely coin amply demonstrates. Census: 3 in 64 (1 in 64+) Cameo, 1 finer (10/12).(Registry values: P5)
