Description

1873 Closed 3 Gold Dollar, PR65
Classic Rarity, None Finer at NGC

1873 G$1 Closed 3 PR65 NGC. Although many business-strike examples were struck using Open 3 dies, all proof 1873 gold dollars were produced with the earlier Closed 3 device. The reported mintage was only 25 pieces, and no more than 9-12 examples are extant today in all grades, making this issue one of the greatest rarities of the series. The proof mintage suffered from low production values in 1873, and poorly finished dies, spaced too far apart, gave many examples a granular appearance, with significant loss of detail. This well-detailed Gem shows these effects to a small degree, but it remains one of the finest surviving examples. The brightly reflective fields are a pleasing yellow-gold color, with green highlights, and only minor signs of contact. Census: 2 in 65, 0 finer (9/11).(Registry values: P8)
