Exceedingly Rare 1873 Closed 3 Gold Dollar, PR 66 PCGS

1873 G$1 Closed 3 PR 66 PCGS. The fact that some crisp, reflective business strikes of this issue have been offered as proofs, and vice versa, compels us to list Breen's (1977) diagnostics for this rare proof delivery:

    1. The feather in Liberty's headdress below the AT in STATES is incomplete from excessive die polishing.
    2. The date is nearly centered with the bottom of each digit sloping up to the right.
    3. The top of the reverse wreath is open.

As implied by these diagnostics, only one die pair was used to produce 25 proof gold dollars in 1873. There are no official proof 1873 Open 3 gold dollars, and the number of surviving Closed 3 examples is probably on the order of 18 pieces. On the other hand, NGC and PCGS combined have certified only six examples, one of which is impaired (10/00).
The finest representative known to the two major grading services, this golden-rose Gem exhibits uniformly mirrored surfaces that are expectantly blemish-free for the grade. There are a few shallow planchet voids (as produced) on Liberty's cheek and neck, but these features are only discernible under a loupe. We have been unable to trace the pedigree of this rare coin, but we are certain that is not the Eliasberg specimen (Bowers & Ruddy, 10/82, lot 62), Trompeter example (Superior, 2/92, lot 19), or Pittman specimen (Akers, 10/97, lot 909). (NGC ID# 25EG, PCGS# 7623)
