Rare Proof 1873 Closed 3 Gold Dollar

1873 G$1 Closed 3 PR58 NGC. This slightly impaired specimen displays rich mustard-yellow color and reveals trivial scuffiness in the more exposed areas. Breen's (1977) diagnostics for this elusive proof delivery are as follows:

    1. The feather in Liberty's headdress below the AT in STATES is incomplete from excessive die polishing.
    2. The date is nearly centered with the bottom of each digit sloping up to the right.
    3. The top of the reverse wreath is open.

As implied by these diagnostics, only one die pair was used to produce 25 proof gold dollars in 1873. There are no official proof 1873 Open 3 gold dollars, and the number of surviving Closed 3 examples is probably on the order of 18 pieces. Population: 1 in 58, 2 finer (5/01).
