Description

1874 Gold Dollar, PR58
Only 20 Proofs Struck, CAC

1874 G$1 JD-1, Low R.7, PR58 PCGS. CAC. The Mint struck just 20 gold dollar proofs in 1874, a low figure compared to the 198,800 commercial strikes from that year. This near-Mint proof is JD-1, in which only the L in LIBERTY is visible. John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population of this variety between 8-12 examples. This rare gold proof displays frosty devices on bright orange-gold surfaces for colorful contrast. Wear is light, abrasions are minimal and overall eye appeal is outstanding. Minute hairlines preclude a PR60 or better grade.
