Solitary 1874 Proof Dollar
1874 PR 64 PCGS. With an initial reported mintage of only twenty pieces, the 1874 must be considered an extraordinary rarity. This is the only example that PCGS has certified; none higher, none lower (6/96). In short, coins do not come any rarer than this if one is to have any hope at all of adding them to a collection. And isn't it a delight that this specimen should have survived in such attractive condition. The mirrored fields are toned a flashy orange-gold color, contrast nicely with the satiny head of Liberty. The toning effectively obscures a heavy hairline in the field in front of Liberty, but it is probably the minute marks on her cheek that prevented this phenomenal coin from achieving an even higher grade.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25EH, PCGS# 7624, GSID# 8160)
