Underrated 1877 Gold Dollar
PR65 Cameo

1877 G$1 PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC The gold dollar proofs of 1877 were struck in the tiny recorded amount of 20 pieces, and we would be surprised if 15 separate coins survive today -- possibly no more than 13. This is despite the 22 submissions at NGC and PCGS combined -- more than the original mintage, a figure obviously riddled with duplications. Garrett and Guth write that "the date is very rare in any grade of true Proof," and the present PR65 Cameo is the only such at NGC, although that service shows three in PR66 Cameo along with two in PR65 Ultra Cameo (one with a Star) and three in PR66 Ultra Cameo (one also with a Star). Again, these grading events are highly suspect as being all different coins.
This Gem proof shows blatant contrast over orange-gold surfaces that show few signs of contact, although the CA in AMERICA are softly struck, apparently as made at the Mint. The strike otherwise is bold, and this piece boasts generous eye appeal. As one of the nicest survivors of this extremely underrated issue, this piece should see spirited bidding at auction.
