Description

1878 Gold Dollar, PR62
20 Proofs Struck, About 15 Survive

1878 G$1 PR62 PCGS. JD-1, High R.6. The design elements are as sharp as one would expect for a proof of this vintage. Stark contrast is seen between the frosty motifs and the reflective orange-peel fields, although PCGS has not awarded a formal Cameo designation. This piece was probably gently wiped a long time ago, resulting in faint wispy lines on each side that limit the grade. The 1878 gold dollar has a paltry total-mintage of 3,000 circulation strikes and merely 20 proofs, making this a rare specimen in the absolute sense. Population: 1 in 62, 3 finer (9/20).
