Description

1878 Gold Dollar, PR64 Cameo
Ex: Trompeter Collection

1878 G$1 PR64 Cameo PCGS. Ex: Trompeter Collection. Only 20 proof 1878 gold dollars were minted on February 9, and auction records are few. Possibly up to a dozen survive, although the total population may be as few as eight or nine coins. The Ed Trompeter Collection was a remarkable assemblage of proof gold coins from gold dollars to twenty dollar gold pieces. Trompeter was fond of saying that "real men collect proof gold by date." Although slightly hairlined, this gleaming Choice Cameo proof has a natural light haze of its deeply mirrored orange-gold fields and frosty, highly lustrous devices. PCGS has graded nine 1878 gold dollars in two numeric levels, and with three designations, including two in PR64 Cameo and two in PR65 Cameo. The others include one PR64, two PR65, and two PR65 Deep Cameo (11/12). We suspect some resubmissions are included in those figures.
Ex: N.M. Kaufman Collection (RARCOA, 8/1978), lot 647; Ed Trompeter (Superior, 2/1992), lot 24.
