Description

1878 Gold Dollar, Deep Cameo PR65
Only 20 Pieces Struck

1878 G$1 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. Although the final six dates of gold dollars have proof mintages of more than 1,000 pieces, only 20 proof gold dollars were issued in 1878, along with 3,000 business strikes. As a result, the proof 1878 is rare today, and PCGS has certified only nine examples in all grades. Among those, none are certified in grades above PR65, and only one other specimen is certified by PCGS as Deep Cameo (11/12). This is a crisply struck Gem with sun-gold centers and cherry-red margins. Void of post-strike detractions, and the sole imperfections are a tiny lint mark on the obverse field near the profile and minor incompleteness of strike on portions of the central reverse field. Minor repunching is present on the base of the 1 and the loops of the first 8 in the date.
