Description

1879 Gold Dollar, PR64 Cameo
Rare Proof Date, CAC Endorsed, JD-1

1879 G$1 JD-1, R.6, PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The proof mintage was only 30 pieces, making the 1879 gold dollar proofs rare in any case. An additional 10 proofs were struck later in the year. As with the 1877 and 1878 proof gold dollars, the same dies were used to strike proofs as circulation strikes. The proofs were made with polished blanks adding watery depth to the field mirroring. This proof displays a partial LIBERTY in the diadem and tiny pits on the neck, diagnostic of the later proof strikes. Rich orange-gold color flows evenly throughout the glassy fields, with frosted devices providing stark Cameo contrast. CAC endorsement confirms high quality for the assigned grade. Only 14 to 18 proofs survive for this rare gold dollar issue. Population: 6 in 64 Cameo, 2 finer. CAC: 2 in 64, 0 finer (8/25).
