Description
PR66 Deep Cameo 1879 Gold Dollar
Second-Finest at PCGS
1879 G$1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Without exception, every
regular-issue proof gold coin dated 1879 is an important rarity.
Only 30 proofs of each denomination were coined, and few survive
today. Auction records suggest that the proof gold dollars are not
as rare as the larger-denomination pieces, although many deceptive
first-strike coins exist, some of which have been called proofs in
the past. Both proofs and business strikes were produced from the
same die pair, creating further confusion. However, there is no doubt about the proof status of this beauty. It displays amazingly profound cameo contrast, with brilliant yellow-gold luster on the devices and deeply mirrored fields. This piece is likely the second-finest known, behind a PR66 Deep Cameo that we handled in 2003, which now is apparently in a PR66+ Deep Cameo PCGS slab. There are no finer examples in any designation.
There are about a dozen examples known, possibly as many as 15, including two in the Smithsonian Institution and one in the Western Heritage Museum, ex: Byron Reed. Others include the Garrett, Eliasberg, Bass, Carter, and Trompeter specimens, all different coins from this piece.
