1879 Gold Dollar, Proof 64, PCGS
1879 PR 64 PCGS. A very rare gold dollar as a proof, and a date not to be confused with the common proofs from the mid and late 1880s. It has been estimated that of the 30 proofs struck, only 15-18 survive today. This piece is a State I coin, struck on January 25, as evidenced by the crisscrossing lines within the left bow. This is a deeply reflective proof that has a good portion of frost on the devices that provides the coin with a stark white on black cameo contrast. There are a few scattered marks in the fields, but these do little to diminish the overall attractiveness of the coin.
