    Description

    1880 Gold Dollar, PR64
    Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr.

1880 G$1 PR64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: HW Bass Jr Collection. We seldom have the opportunity to offer a confirmed 1880 proof gold dollar. Just 36 proofs were struck yielding an estimated 22 to 27 survivors (according to the Bowers reference). Because the proof dies were also used to produce prooflike circulation strikes, the proof characteristics described by David Akers are important, including the wreath tops solidly joined at the top, with large frosted areas at the wreath ends, and broad, square edges.

The present coin comes from the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection -- an unquestioned Choice proof, with a distinguished provenance to confirm its status as such. The glittering yellow-gold surfaces show mirrorlike fields and lightly frosted on the devices. Amber-gold and lilac accents enrich the coloration. A pair of pinpoint copper alloy marks pedigree the piece to its roots in the Scanlon and Bass collections, while a few delicate lines account for the near-Gem grade. This an outstanding opportunity for collectors of proof gold dollars to acquire the seldom-seen 1880 issue. Population: 4 in 64, 1 finer (1/16).
Ex: Scanlon Collection (Stack's, 10/1973), lot 1997; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 10/1999), lot 210.
