Description

1880 PR 65 Cameo NGC. A splendid two-toned specimen with glittering fields set against heavily frosted devices. The 1880 gold dollar is a very rare coin as a proof and not a date to be confused with the much more common proofs struck later in the decade. Only 36 pieces were struck and, since most business strikes display full prooflike brilliance, the number of proof 1880 gold dollars available has been exaggerated for many years. In reality, their numbers may be less than two dozen coins. Truly one of the highlights of this year's Central States auction. Population: 1 in 65 (1 at PCGS), none higher.
