Description

1881 Gold Dollar, PR64
Undesignated Cameo Contrast

1881 G$1 PR64 PCGS. CAC. An exceptionally low output of proof gold dollars was achieved in 1881 with only 87 pieces struck. This piece is not designated as Cameo or Deep Cameo, and we have to wonder why. Each side displays extraordinarily deep mirrors. Contrasted against the mirroring are the thickly frosted devices. The fields show the often-seen orange-peel texture of proof gold from this era. We see no contact marks that are worthy of mention. This piece represents an excellent value if it can be purchased as a non-Cameo. Population: 4 in 64, 1 finer (8/13).(Registry values: P3)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25ER, PCGS# 7631, Greysheet# 8181)

Weight: 1.67 grams
