Description
Rare 1881 Gold Dollar, PR66 Deep Cameo
1881 G$1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. This is a rare issue in proof grades, regardless of the numerical level. The mintage was only 87 coins, and less than half of those are thought to have survived today (Paul Taglione, 1986). Many deceptive prooflike examples exist, and there are no distinguishing characteristics, thus certification is imperative. According to David Akers (1975), true proofs have a small unfinished area near the D on the reverse, but even this diagnostic is not conclusive. For example, the present piece does not show any evidence of this unfinished die work, yet the mirrored surfaces and sharp strike clearly indicate its proof status. The devices are frosty and lustrous, and both sides of this Premium Gem exhibit light yellow-gold color. Population: 4 in 66 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (8/07).(Registry values: P3)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25ER, PCGS# 97631, Greysheet# 8183)
